Last week Methodist Hospital for Surgery had the privilege to honor Tim Ashley as the Employee of the Quarter. Tim is an anesthesia tech and has been with us for almost 9 years. For an example of the type of person he is, Tim was shopping at his local grocery store a few weeks back and saw a woman collapse His instincts and training immediately kicked in and ran to the woman's aid. He found that she had stopped breathing. He immediately yelled for emergency assistance (911) and began CPR. He performed chest compressions for 90 minutes until the paramedics arrived! As if that wasn’t amazing enough, this was the second life he saved that day! He resuscitated a patient in the ER at the hospital earlier that morning. What an incredible day! National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually during the third week of April and this year it will be observed from April 21 to 27. This week-long celebration is about placing a spotlight on inspiring figures whose invaluable seeds of kindness through volunteering are bettering the community and our world in general. This significant celebration which was established in 1974 provides the perfect opportunity to say thank you. It also challenges us to do better and look for ways to be active participants, joining hands to impact our local communities and calling for more support. Here at Methodist Hospital for Surgery, we are proud of Volunteers and Junior Volunteers (ages 16 - 18). Our volunteer, Karen, has been with us since we opened in 2010! She is invaluable to our Employee Health Department. We also have Junior Volunteers who work several hours for school credit. Volunteering peaked during the Great Depression - During the 1930s, the U.S. launched a large-scale coordinated volunteer effort to assist the millions of hungry, homeless, and unemployed people via relief efforts. 2. There’s a ‘Year of the Volunteer’ - The year 2001 is proclaimed as the International Year of Volunteers (I.Y.V.) by the United Nations General Assembly. 3. Volunteers have helped in deeply tragic events - Hurricane Katrina, Haiti's deadly earthquake, Indian Ocean earthquake, and tsunami; volunteers have been there through it all. Theirs is the face you see during the most trying times, offering help and assisting with disaster relief and recovery. 4. The ‘United We Serve’ campaign - President Barack and Michelle Obama announced this campaign, calling for more engagement in service. 5.
