Community Homes for Adults Inc. (CHAI) was established in 1983 when a small group of committed and dedicated community leaders, led by Carmen Miller Michael (of blessed memory), realized their dream of establishing a group home for adults with intellectual disabilities. When the first group home, opened it was cutting edge in the field. The model for many decades had been institutional care. From CHAI's beginning, the clear mission is to enable adults with intellectual disabilities to live full, rich, safe lives while meaningfully participating tin the community. We help our residents by providing programs and services that enable them to live as independently as possible, and to enrich their lives by building relationships with each other as well as with the larger community. Today, CHAI maintains nine group homes (in North Dallas), over 60 staff (including robust nursing services) that provide services to individual clients in the community through Wolens Program Services and operates an Individualized and Socialization Services (a day program) at the Jewish Community Center, and CLUB CHAI for social programs. We rely on funding support from kind and generous donations from our community to help us cover the gap between what the Medicaid Wavier provides and what it actually cost to take care of those we serve. We have to raise roughly a million dollars per year to provide the care that our families and community expects.
