Autistic bestselling author, speaker, tutor. Available to speak about autistic experience in education, the workplace and life generally. 'Untypical' - available now!
Twelve things you need to know about autistic people - please read and share... 1. There are way more of us than you think - maybe even as many as one-in-twenty. 2. We can be a pretty empathetic bunch, and can sometimes be extremely empathetic to the point of it being quite intense. We often don't know what to do with it, mind you. 3. Autistic children become, in time, autistic adults. It doesn't go away and we don't grow out of it. We might learn to 'mask' our autistic traits though, at great cost, to avoid being bullied. 4. Non-speaking autistic people can have very rich internal lives - not speaking doesn't equate to not having anything to say. Widen your expectations of how people communicate and listen/read more carefully. 5. Autistic people generally can understand sarcasm and irony, and metaphor too. In the speediness of spoken communication it can get missed or lost, though. Autistic people can be extraordinarily funny. There are a lot of autistic writers and comedians. 6. Autistic people are in demographics other than stereotypical white/cis/male. There are autistic people in every demographic - women, Black, trans, indigenous - and, as would be expected, they experience a lot of intersectional prejudice. 7. Autistic people can feel love. Obviously. There are married autistic people, and loads of autistic parents (after all that's a big source of autistic people). A large proportion of autistic people are in the LGBTQ+ community - I think maybe because we are less interested in following strict societal convention, so we seem to live our own lives quite true to ourselves. I don't know - jury is definitely still out. 8. Autism is not a monolith. All of these are generally applicable but are not 100% always the case by any means. Often it's the exact opposite - read replies to find examples as I guarantee there will be lots! 9. Autistic people can, and do, hold down jobs at every level. You'll find autistic CEOs, for example. But work *can* be difficult for autistic people, often because the environment and social expectations are unreasonable. 10. Autistic people work really hard, so much of the time, to ensure communication goes smoothly. It's just such a big, difficult job that it often goes wrong. This is because we have very different ways to communicate compared to non-autistic people. 11. Autistic people do not have to have some inexplicable mega-skill of savant-like abilities. Expecting us to is a horrible assumption. We can have very 'spiky' skill sets though - amazing at some stuff, dreadful at others. 12. Autism is not an 'epidemic'. Rates are increasing because we're so much better at identifying it. Turns out we've presumably *always* been a sizeable minority. People are born autistic, and always have been. Much more of this kind of thing in my book 'Untypical - How the World Isn’t Built for Autistic People and What we Should All Do About It' - Available now! #autism #autistic #autismsupport #autisticadults
